An alcohol free venue for Cheltenham

The Hub Project will soon be opening an alcohol free live entertainment venue in Cheltenham thanks to grants from Public Health England and Cheltenham’s Late Night Levy scheme. The venue will offer an alternative for people who want to socialise and be entertained without all the hassle associated with alcohol and will add a greater diversity to Cheltenhams nightlife. Cheltenham town Centre has recently been awarded Purple Flag Status for its well managed night time economy so this project is a welcome addition to the town.

The project will operate in a similar way to our Hub Bistro in Gloucester which employs a small number of staff who support a team of volunteers- many of whom are in recovery from addiction and want to build skills and experience to help them return to long term paid employment. Opportunities will include roles such as Kitchen Assistant, Barista, Events Assistant and Administrator. All of our volunteering opportunities come with training opportunities so please get in touch if you are interested by emailing info@recoveryhub.co.uk.

Russel Brand opens the Hub Bistro

In October 2016 the Comedian Russel Brand visited the Hub Bistro to celebrate the work of the project, present volunteer awards and officially open the bistro. He was joined by Gilly Green and Kevin Cahill from Comic Relief, our revenue funder for the past 2 years.

Our volunteers were thrilled to get the chance to meet Russel. The Give it Up! fund he set up with Comic Relief has supported four pilot projects across the UK, the Hub Project being one of them. Both teams from the Hub Bistro and the Hub Maintains, our maintenance project, were given awards for their work with a comical commentary from the celebrity.

His presence caused a bit of a stir in Southgate Street, where the Hub Bistro is based, as he took the time to talk to local passers by and have selfies taken with most of them. Social media went crazy for the few hours he was with us!

Despite his celebrity status the care and interest Russel took in the people he spoke to was clear. As he walked down the street he spoke with a drug user who talked of trying to get clean, he spoke with compassion and offered the young man some advice based on his own experience. To many people Russel Brand is a comedian, and to some a bit of a trouble maker. But, those that got to meet him at the event met the human being and the recovering addict, someone who champions the fact that recovery is possible wherever he goes.
